Burberry Makers House Exhibition 2016
On Thursday 22nd of September, Burberry opened the doors of the Makers House exhibition to students at the University of Huddersfield. I was one of those students.
The exhibition was not only to showcase their latest S/S 2017 collection but to showcase the New Craftsmen, a group of selected designers and craft men, who were all running workshops to show their skills all of which were inspired by Burberry's collection.
The collection itself was the first ever that was available for customers to buy straight after they had been showcased on the catwalk. Burberry is pioneering this idea so that their customers can get their hands their products as soon as the show has finished. It is Burberry's answer to an instant generation, making it quicker for customer to get trends from the catwalk cutting down the waiting time and using the hype and publicity of the catwalk to sell their clothing, instead of waiting for the selected season to come around when the excitement has dwindled. this is not the conventional practice and that meant that Burberry have had to work much quicker and harder to get their stock in store and ready for the consumer to buy when the collection went live.
As I was walking around the exhibition I was amazed by the work they had put into the whole Soho warehouse. Everything was reflective of the chosen theme, Virgina Woolf's novel Orlando. You could see how influenced the collection was by the novel as many of the themes were gender fluid and created to be non binary fashion, (which you can also see on the catwalk as many pieces are worn by both male and female models.) this links back to the novel as the main character falls asleep one day and wakes up a different gender. Slumber was also a theme that ran through the collection with pieces designed around sleep wear, baggy and comfortable but paired with more traditional Burberry styles.. The collection also had strong 1800's fashion themes including a military theme with coats using gold and silver embellishment accompanied but silver buttons to link back to the grandeur of the 1800's military uniforms.
Burberry as a brand has always been innovators and this new collection and new approach to selling to their consumers is proof of this statement.
The catwalk was streamed live on Monday 19th of September but here is a YouTube link to it. Totally worth a watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFyrHZNohhU
Also while you’re on Burberry YouTube watch their 'The Tale of Thomas Burberry' video film because that is very good and gives a good history to the starting of the company and it has Domhnall Gleeson, Sienna Miller, Dominic West and Lily James staring in it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6D5IZtDCS5c
