Adobe
Over the last 12 weeks I have been taught to
use Adobe Bridge and Adobe InDesign. Both have been helpful in aiding the
design of my trend board, bridge to order the images and sort them and InDesign
to put the trend boards’ together. It has been a learning curve using both
these applications especially since I learnt to use then on a Mac which is also
a new experience to me.
Adobe Bridge
Bridge was the first adobe application we
were given lessons using, learning how to put images into the program which I
could then sort through to find the best quality images and to link together
images which worked well together. I was also taught to put them into a contact
sheet which could then be printed to help us further sort the images. I used
Adobe Bridge to create a comp sheet for my first attempt at a trend board,
before I put the images onto InDesign I first put them into Bridge and sorted
through the images finding the best images which I felt worked well together
then put them onto a contact sheet. I created the contact sheet so it would be
easier to show other to get their opinion which worked better than if I had
shown them on a computer. I feel that using Bridge and learning how
to use it successfully was a challenge to me especially since I was learning to
use it on an apple Mac but overall I feel it was a good experience to have gone
through because I now have these image sorting skills which I can definitely
take with me in my professional life. After I understood how to use the
application I can to understand why using
Bridge would be very helpful for when I get into the industry because of
how Bridge sped up the process of choosing images and sorting them so I could
find the images I wanted quicker and easier. I understand how transferable the
skill of using Adobe Bridge is because I have been collecting images for other
modules and my blog and using bridge to sort them would cut down time and
decrease the effort I would have to put into image data collection. However I
feel I have not been consistent at using bridge, my experience with bridge was
closer to the start of the term and I didn’t use it in the later weeks because
I was learning to use InDesign but I feel that my experience could have been
better if I’d have used it more regularly over the last 12 week, refreshing my
memory on how to use it to the best of my ability. I understand that I will
lose my knowledge of how to use Bridge if I don’t keep using it regularly.
I have learnt from this experience that to
keep my knowledge fresh in my head I must keep revisiting things to refresh my
knowledge. I have also learnt that using bridge is a quicker and more organised
way to sort images which makes data collection easier over time. I can apply
this knowledge to future learning experiences by knowing I need to keep going
back to activities so that I don’t forget what I have learnt and so I can
refresh my memories of how to use or do something. My targets for using bridge in
the future are that I do go back on a regular basis and use it for sorting my
data collection so that I don’t forget how to use it successfully and also to
use Lynda.com to help learn more ways of using bridge utilising their video
tutorials which they put on there.
Adobe InDesign
InDesign is what I used to put my trend
board boards together. Before we had our lesson learning to use adobe InDesign I
used Lynda.com to watch tutorials on the basic skills needed to put together a
document on InDesign. I did this so when I went into the lesson I had a base
understanding of how to use the program which I could build on from in the
lesson. In the lesson we learnt different skills which would help us put a
trend board together. We learnt about different techniques to help us create
the most appealing looking document and how to package the document to create a
PDF of our final document so that it can be uploaded to our blog or sent to
interviews. I feel that learning how to use adobe InDesign was such a helpful and useful skill to be given the chance to learn about. Before this term I had used adobe Photoshop and adobe Illustrator but I had not heard of InDesign but as a formatting application I can see how it can be superior to other programs, instead of using a PowerPoint or a Word document I can see the value in using it to create high quality PDFs and documents. I feel that this skill I have been taught will be very transferable into the industry and to other activities. Even if I don’t find a join the Fashion Industry this is a skill which I feel I can take into many other jobs and will give me a competitive advantage over others. What could have been better about my experience is that I would have liked to have learnt to use Indesign on a PC because I have a better understanding of how to use a PC and I would have picked up the skills quicker. However being given basic training on a Mac could have overcome this problem as using a Mac may be industry standard and knowing how to use one successfully can be a transferable skill. I could have overcome this quicker by finding online tutorials which I could watch and also using the Macs in the library to get better at using them.
